Between January and March 2008, the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo exhibited the project Totoro, conceived by the collective Chelpa Ferro. Produced by Automatica, Totoro, was a complex exhibition, specifically developed for the space of the Octógono, in the Pinacoteca. Using a soundtrack composed by the group, several devices were integrated to allow the sound to occupy the exhibition space of the museum. A pulley system, with the help of a pre-programmed engine, moved a set of speakers up and down, and made them disappear, from time to time, into a wooden tube in the center of the room.

Working once again with Chelpa Ferro, Automática produced in December 2008, a grandiose presentation of the collective in the Teatro Oi Casa Grande, in Rio de Janeiro. The concert was part of Mutiplicidade (Mutliplicity), an event curated permanently by Batman Zavareze. With unprecendented spectacle created specially for this program, A Autopsia da Cigarra Gigante (The Autopsy of the Giant Cicada), gathered deconstructive pieces of classic music that were played by an orchestra conducted by the maestro, composer, arranger, instrumentalist and music producer Jacques Morelenbaum. Furthermore, Chelpa Ferro showed projections establishing a conversation between unusual instruments, incense, samplers, as well as with their Moby Dick, a giant drum set converted into a sculptural installation created by the group themselves.

With the purpose of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Teatro Oficina, Heloisa Buarque de Holanda conceived a tribute in the shape of an exhibition. By inviting three curators related to the universe of the Theater as well as to the Oficina itself — Alberto Renault, Camila Mota and Lucas Wegliski — the exhibition established a dense dialogue between the group’s history (and its emblematic director José Celso Martinez Corrêa) and the space of the Centro Cultural dos Correios. Archive material, notebooks, manifests, films unknown to the public and various records about the pieces of the group made up the material of the exhibition.

Conceived by Heloisa Buarque de Holanda and curated by Henrique Lins de Barros, the exhibition H2O faced the challenge of showing, in an innovative format, the history and role of water in our daily lives . Installed at the Arte SESC of Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro, H2O provided, with originality, a wide range of material embracing the theme. Through well conceived projections and back lights, the ambiance of the show involved the public visually and it was able to integrate image and information efficiently.

The exhibition Paisagemnaturezamortaretrato (Landscapestilllifeportrait)was a solo show by Luiz Zerbini held in Centro Universitário Maria Antônia, São Paulo, in October and November 2008. With exteme simplicity, Zerbini extended to the whole of the gallery space his relationship with color and painting. A skull resting on the floor added a final touch to the ambiance. The paint used by the artist for the paintings was metallic and reflected whoever observed them. The precision of the execution of the project by Automatica initiated a lasting partnership with Luiz Zerbini.

More than an exhibition, Carlos Vergara made of HUZUN a collective project around his work. With the participation of the artists Gustavo Moura and the art critic Luiz Camillo Osório, Vergara showed in Oi Futuro, in Rio de Janeiro, a series of photographs and monotypes developed during two trips to Turkey, the first in 2006 and the second in 2008. The main focus of these forays was Capadocia, with its early churches carved into sandstone and underground dwellings loaded with the history of Christianity that began in the first century. Istambul, formerly Constantinople, also had some of its markets, minarets, mosques and ancient churches photographed. This raw material collected on site was taken to the studio and prepared for the exhibition. After digital manipulation, the photographs taken during the trips took several forms : prints on metacrilato, projections, 3D lenticular and 3D in real space, results of the intersection of images in space. The exhibition also featured monotypes on scarves that carry physical traces of the architecture and geography of this unique place.

Group show of Brazilian artists held in the Museo de América, in Madrid, Spain, curated by Adolfo Montejo Navas. With work by Ana Maria Tavares, Lula Wanderley, Elida Tessler, Efrain Almeida, Lenora de Barros, José Rufino, Marcelo Solá, Rosângela Rennó, Sandra Cinto e Vicente de Mello, this exhibition was an extension of the Brazilian participation in Arco 08. The curator’s intention was to bring together several works investigating subjectivity, the relationship with the other, language appropriation and simultaneity, negotiations between fiction and reality, and the relationship between writing and text. Besides that, the exhibition increased ties between Brazilian and Spanish institutions in the field of Visual Arts.

For the fifth time, Automática produces an exhibition for Projeto Respiração (Breathing Project). Curated by Marcio Doctors, this project builds a bridge between the classical collection of the Fundação Eva Klabin and contemporary art. Nuno Ramos, one of the leading names of Brazilian art today, presented the exhibition Pergunte ao (Ask), an intervention that took over the entire space of the beautiful house-museum in Lagoa, Rio de Janeiro, where he intended, by using mirrors, granite and glass, to turn the rich collection of the foundation in on itself, in some sort of internal dialogue between the pieces and their reflections and secrets.

Each of the materials chosen by the artist defined the different sections of the exhibition and their titles: Mirror/Ask, Granite/Permit, Glass/Showcase. Nuno Ramos wrote a text specifically for each one of these sections.
